Lutz confirms V12-powered Cadillac flagship

Bob Lutz, General Motors product guru, has confirmed plans for a new Cadillac V12-powered flagship sedan. The new sedan is expected to be inspired by the popular Cadillac Sixteen coupe car, and will compete with the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS.

Lutz said in an interview that GM’s Holden division is working on the new V12 for the new flagship. The new V12 is built from two 3.6L V6 engines mated to a common crankshaft. The 7.2L V12 will feature direct-injection, and deliver around 600-hp.

Early test mules for the flagship Cadillac are reportedly riding on the new rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform. The Zeta platform may underpin more than the test mules, with the production model also derived from the Zeta.

That's awesome, I can't wait to see what they come up with. It's about time Cadillac grew it's balls back.

This is good news provided that Cadillac is up to the task of delivering a product worthy of its market position. The XLR fell flat on its ass because it was a car that was priced and packaged to compete with the SL, but simply didn't have the goods.

Sure, if you price it high they will come. But how many "they" are is entirely dependent upon weather or not the product has substance. The XLR was almost a joke, and there's no reason why a new Caddy flagship couldn't be just as awful.

Yeah this will be interesting. 600hp will ensure it has the oomph, but the interior, styling, refinement and engineering has to be tops to compete with cars like the S-Class and LS.

And do you believe for even a nanosecond that GM is capable of delivering in those departments? Nothing would point to the affirmative. The DTS is the "most classy" thing in GM's current portfolio, and the XLR was simply pitiful if we consider that the SL was the car's goalpost.

It'll be a pleasant shock if Caddy is able to pull a compelling flaship out of their ass. Right now, the cards seem stacked against it.

Well I want to believe it, but unless GM has truly changed the way they do cars then it won't have a prayer of matching anything in this class.
