Cadillac Cadillac is the oldest automobile manufacturer to originate in Detroit, Michigan. The company is named after the French explorer who founded the city. General Motors purchased Cadillac in 1909 and that same year Cadillac produced almost 6,000 vehicles. Over six million vehicles had been built by the end of the 1970s; Cadillac celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002.

Cadillac targets BMW: Rear-drive 3 Series rival due in 2011

To compete on a worldwide scale with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac will replace the failed BLS with an all-new rear-drive model probably coming to the U.S. about 2011. It'll be a 3 Series-size sedan on a new, longitudinal engine rear-/all-wheeldrive platform. The new architecture, as GM would call it, would likely use components from a number of different existing component sets to create a car too small for Sigma (current reardrive Cadillacs) or Zeta (Camaro, Pontiac G8, et al.).

That purple car looks really good actually, if you would excuse the paint colour... If this means more competition for the 3er (and more choices for us), I'm all for it.

Re: Cadillac targets BMW: Rear-drive 3 Series rival due in 2011

The problem with GM is that by 2011 BMW will have moved the target considerably as will have Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Hell Lexus and Infiniti will be more advanced by then too. By 2011 Acura, yes Acura of all brands will likely have seen the light and gone RWD by then.

This concept was shown like in 2003 or 2004 and now they're saying something meaningful will come by 2011? This has to be a joke. GM has so much potential if they can just get down the business of making better cars in a timely fashion.

GM took ages to approve the plan, and when they did approve it, they stopped the developement about a year ago, and now they have resume the developement again, no idea why.

I knew they did that with the larger RWD models, but I didn't know that was the case with the smaller ones. My guess would be tough times, losing all that money in 2005 put a hold on everything not deemed vital at that precise moment.
