Cadillac is the oldest automobile manufacturer to originate in Detroit, Michigan. The company is named after the French explorer who founded the city. General Motors purchased Cadillac in 1909 and that same year Cadillac produced almost 6,000 vehicles. Over six million vehicles had been built by the end of the 1970s; Cadillac celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002.

The first Chevrolet automobile was the Classic Six, produced in 1911. The first Chevrolet truck was produced in 1918, the same year the automaker was purchased by General Motors. In 1927 Chevrolet became America's best-selling nameplate, selling over one million cars. The Corvette celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2003 with a caravan of 5,000 Corvettes driven by owners from each of the 50 states converging at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Chrysler Corporation began as the Maxwell Motor Corporation, which hired Walter Chrysler in 1921 to help the company out of bankruptcy. Chrysler flirted with bankruptcy again in the early 1980s, but Lee Iacocca and the K-car came to the rescue, followed in 1984 with the introduction of the market-changing minivan. In November 1998 Chrysler became a division of DaimlerChrysler AG, created by a merger between Daimler-Benz and the Chrysler Corporation. In 2007 Chrysler split from Daimler to become Chrysler LLC.

Dodge was founded by John and Horace Dodge, who began manufacturing bicycles in 1899. In 1910 the Dodge brothers set out to become the biggest auto parts manufacturers, and in 1914 they unveiled the first Dodge car. Dodge cars and trucks became known for their ruggedness, and in 1928 Dodge was purchased by the Chrysler Corporation

The Ford Motor Company was incorporated in 1903 with ten people and $28,000. The company created the Model T, possibly the most famous automobile of all time. Ford produced its one-millionth vehicle in 1915, and introduced the first Ford truck two years later. Today, in addition to producing the Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda and Premier Automotive Group brands (Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo), the company retains an interest in financing, parts and service, and car rental.

Previously referred to as AM General, Hummer began as the General Products Division of AMC Jeep. In 1983 the U.S. government awarded the military contract for the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) to AM General. In 1992 AM General was purchased by the Renco Group, Inc., which introduced a civilian version of the HMMWV, the Hummer. General Motors and AM General reached an agreement in December 1999, in which GM acquired exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide.
